Where are you currently working?
Right now I'm working as a Senior Creative Graphic Designer for the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather.
What do you do outside of design?
When I'm not designing I'm working with other guys creating and making films. We have sort of a collective called Milanesa Films which you could say is a another passion for me. Right now we have made a few films and hopefully will be lucky enough to present our work in some of the modern art centers around the world.
How would you describe your work?
Many people say that my work is strange so I tend to agree with that. I can say that I have a little bit of everything in my designs. If there was a formula to describe my work it would have to go like this: (bizarre)2 + (retro) + (cinematic point of view)= Alvaro Sanchez graphic design style.. I have no other way to explain it sorry!!!
If there was one thing you could change about the web, what would it be?
All the pop-up ads!!!
You seem to enjoy designing as I can tell from your submissions to the UC covers section. Where do your ideas and inspirations come from?
Well as the question says I really enjoy to take the time to design covers, so I think when I'm designing covers for example, it gives me a refreshing time to express my ideas and point of views. It give me a pause to all the other things I defintely don't like to design in my job. For example when I designed Porno Cop Love I designed it because a few days ago before I made the design, I saw a Mexican B-Grade movie about cops and wrestlers so that was the look, very 70's, very retro style so thats when I mix my 2 passions - cinema and design. I just made the design in my mind the next day the first thing I made was that. The guy is a friend of mine and I always make jokes about him in Photoshop, so the funny thing is that he looks kind of like the main character in the movie because in the film the hero is always fat and not so good looking. So that's more or less how the ideas came to my mind, if I just saw something and if it clicks on me I made a cover.
What do you find the hardest thing about design?
The hardest thing about design is a white canvas and a blank mind. To avoid that I'm always searching for inspiration. Everything that surrounds us is graphic design you just have to observe the inspiration and realize that once you have found it, how easy the ideas come to your mind and out into the world.
What would be your ideal job?
My ideal job would be to have something like an "Ideas Factory" where I can mix design and cinema, create visuals, design fresh things and make visual art. Maybe creating music video clips for bands and enjoying everything design...feeling that every piece of work is like your new baby born.
And finally, what do you think of Urban Collective?
For me UC has been my graphic salvation or my redemption, because sometimes in my job you have to work with defined guide lines, defined briefs, brandings etc, etc, so it's very hard to improve or create new things when you have to follow "the rules". You can get sick of client work so the refreshing thing with UC is like you recieve a brief with some issue but with the difference that you have the freedom to design that sometimes you don't normally have. It's a place to express and create as you want!!! Keep it up!!! |
